Hawthorn has an affinity towards the heart in all its forms. She is the great harmoinzer and fortifier of the heart. In tincture form, she can balance the physical heart, lowering blood pressure when too high and strengthening it when it’s too low. In her essence form, she harmonizes and strengthens the heart.

This essence was brewed from her berries. Her berries bloom right as the season shifts into darker nights. In this way, she offers the gift of her nourishment for the dark nights ahead.

When meditating with her as the essence brewed, she said simple “you need your heart to go into the dark”. This, for me, means so much. Literally as we move into the dark season, it’s important to connect to the strength of the heart. Also, we need our hearts when things get dark, whatever that means to you, more love, more listening.

The power of the heart, strengthened by Hawthorn, guides us through the illusion of darkness.

She is soft, nourishing, gently opening our hearts to feel more, grieve, and breathe. She also has fierce thorns, standing at the threshold of the dark season, a passageway into transformation, the underworld, death, darkness, however you’d like to think about it.

I feel her as heart medicine, in the sense of nourishing, strengthening, allowing us to mend our grief, soften, feel, and also face the darkest parts of life and ourselves with a more loving gaze.

I view her as a protector in the sense that she strengthens the heart, making us brave, filling us with courage, and allowing the illusion of fear to fall away. She is safe passage into the unknown. In this way, her Winter Solstice medicine is profound, facing the dark, communicating with the dead, and strengthening our core.
